چکیده

SUMMARY Mid-plate upward mantle flow is a key component of global convection, but its patterns are poorly constrained. Seismic anisotropy the most direct way to infer as well melt distribution, yet convection associated with plume-like upwelling understudied due limited seismic data coverage. Here, we investigate beneath Madeira and Canary hotspots using dense set shear wave splitting observations combining teleseismic local events recorded by three-component broad-band short-period stations. Using total 26 stations in archipelago 43 around Islands, obtain 655 high-quality measurements that reveal heterogeneous patterns. Although event results sparse islands, can observe small average S-wave times 0.16 ± 0.01 s, which significantly increase source depth El Hierro (>20 km) Tenerife (>38 up 0.58 0.47 0.05 s. This suggests an influence pocket orientation magma reservoirs developed at uppermost-mantle depths. Likewise, increases islands shield stage volcanism (up 9.81 1.78 per cent Hierro, western Canaries, against values 1.76 0.73 Lanzarote, eastern Canaries). On average, SKS-wave delay large (2.19 s), indicating sublithospheric primary for region. In show smaller SKS (1.93 0.07 s) than ones (2.25 0.11 could be explained destructive interference above upwelling. Despite complex fast polarization directions throughout both regions, some azimuthal pattern across close observed related present-day frozen lithosphere since before 60 Ma. Additionally, current presence plume archipelagos leads complex, small-scale observations.

Fossilized lithospheric deformation revealed by teleseismic shear wave splitting in eastern China

Global mantle convection significantly impacts the processes at Earth’s surface and has been used to gain insights on plate driving forces, lithospheric deformation, and the thermal and compositional structure of the mantle. Upper-mantle seismic anisotropy has been widely employed to study both present and past deformation processes at lithospheric and asthenospheric depths. The eastern China r...

Short Note Seismic Anisotropy from SKS Splitting beneath Northeastern Tibet

The northeastern boundary of the Tibetan high plateau is marked by a 2 km topographic drop and a coincident rapid change in crustal thickness. Surface tectonics are dominated by the Kunlun strike-slip fault system and adjacent Kunlun concealed thrust. The main objective of the current study is to map lateral variations of seismic anisotropy parameters in this region along the linear INDEPTH IV ...

Frequency-dependent shear wave splitting and heterogeneous anisotropic structure beneath the Gulf of California region

The Gulf of California region has undergone a major evolution over the past ∼15Ma, since subduction of the now-extinct Farallon plate ceased and transform motion began, leading to the initiation of rifting and the opening of the Gulf of California ∼5Ma ago. The character of dynamic processes in the upper mantle beneath the region remains poorly understood, but constraints on seismic anisotropy ...

Anisotropy beneath California: shear wave splitting measurements using a dense broadband array

INTRODUCTION SUMMARY We have determined the shear wave splitting parameters for a dense network of broad-band stations in the western United States using high-quality SKS and SKKS waveforms, with par~ ticularly high spatial resolution in the southern California region covered by the TriNet seismic network. The alignment of most fast polarization directions can be explained by plate-tectonic, ex...

Complex anisotropy beneath the Peruvian flat slab from frequency- dependent, multiple-phase shear wave splitting analysis

[1] Flat or shallow subduction is a relatively widespread global occurrence, but the dynamics remain poorly understood. In particular, the interaction between flat slabs and the surrounding mantle flow has yet to be studied in detail. Here we present measurements of seismic anisotropy to investigate mantle flow beneath the Peruvian flat-slab segment, the largest present-day region of flat subdu...
